CT Technology at the Dental Design Center

A CT (computed tomography) scan, also called a CAT (computerized axial tomography) scan, is a diagnostic aid used to obtain three-dimensional images of various body structures. It is a specialized kind of X-ray which is of high diagnostic value because of its clarity and accuracy. Many dental professionals use this type of scan in conjunction with diagnosing and treating their patients.

Uses in Dentistry:

With the help of a CT scan, a dentist is able to determine the exact location and size of a tumor and provide medication or treatment accordingly. Hence it is imperative in the diagnosis of oral cancers.

It is essential for determining the density of the jaw bones before proceeding with dental implants. A CT scan is the most helpful diagnostic tool for these cases, as the images are precise and have no overlapping images, like there are in conventional radio graphs.

It helps in the diagnosis of temporomandibular joint disorders and impacted teeth

It is used for cephalometric analysis

It serves a major role in reconstructive surgery

It can be used to evaluate the nasal cavity, jaws, sinuses and nerve canals.

Benefits of CT Scans When Used In Dentistry:

It provides clear internal anatomy

CT scans are extremely accurate, and there is no overlapping of images or distortion of images. The dentist is able to view the structures with utmost clarity and decide a precise treatment plan.

It has a quick image production

Within a matter of a few seconds, the image of the structure is obtained and can be viewed comfortably on a monitor.

You can obtain a view from various points and angles

The images produced are of three-dimensional form. Hence, they can be viewed from various points and angles. This is one of the biggest advantages of a CT scan when compared to a conventional intraoral or panoramic radiograph.

It allows pre-planning in dental implants, therefore limiting surprises

CT scans play a very important role in dental implant surgery. The success of a dental implant relies on the degree of osseointegration, or put simply, the extent of fusion of the implant to the surrounding bone. The determination of the quality and the quantity of underlying bone is a crucial step in this procedure. CT scans provide the exact dimensions which help the dentist to decide if the bone is strong enough to support an implant. Furthermore, an implantologist is able to prepare a surgical template prior to the implant surgery on the basis of the image obtained through CT scan. This template acts as a guide for the insertion of the dental implants.

Bone and soft tissue can be viewed at the same time

CT scan can be used for the visualization of both hard tissues like bone, and soft tissues like tumors.

It’s a non-invasive procedure

This is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure. Hence, it is painless and  quite comfortable for the patient.

Our team at the Dental Design Center strives hard to deliver the best treatment solution to you. We have this CT technology available at our office so that we can always provide the highest level of care to our patients. We understand how important your smile is for you! That is why your dental needs are our top priority.

Information for patients having a dental cone beam CT scan

This aims to answer your questions about having a dental cone beam computerized tomography (CT) scan. It explains the benefits, risks and alternatives, as well as what you can expect when you come to hospital. If you have any further questions, please speak to a doctor or nurse caring for you. What is dental cone beam CT scan? A dental cone beam CT scanner uses x-rays and a computer to produce 3D cross sectional images of the jaws and teeth. It is a compact, faster and safer version of the regular CT scanner. Through the use of a cone shaped x-ray beam, the size of the scanner, radiation dosage and time needed for scanning are all much reduced. The machine moves around your head in a circular motion in a similar way to the panoramic dental radiography unit which is commonly used in dental surgeries and hospitals, which you may have already experienced.

What happens during dental cone beam CT (CBCT)?

You will be seated in the CBCT machine. Your head will be carefully positioned and you will be asked to keep absolutely still while the scan is taken. The positioning takes a few minutes, but each scan takes only a minute or so. You may need more than one scan depending on the reason for your examination. The whole procedure should not take more than 30 minutes.

Why should I have a dental CBCT?

The scan will give us detailed information which cannot be obtained from more conventional xray equipment. For example, if you are being considered for dental implants or other special procedures it enables us to assess the exact shape of the bone.

What are the risks?

CBCT scans are low dose examinations and give an x-ray dose to the patient that is considerably less than a medical CT scan. A medical CT scan of the upper jaw gives a radiation dose equivalent to approximately 179- 578 days of background radiation (the radiation constantly present in the environment). A CBCT scan of the whole jaw would be comparable to approximately 12-30 days of normal background radiation. As with any x-ray examination, please inform the radiographer if you might be pregnant.

Dental Implant Armamentarium

Piezotome

Piezosurgical is a process that utilizes piezoelectric vibrations in the application of cutting bone tissue. By adjusting the ultra sonic frequency of the device, it is possible to cut hard tissue while safely avoiding damage to nearby soft tissues. This decrease in collateral trauma during procedures such as osteotomies, osteoplasties, ridge expansion, autogenous bone harvesting, and sinus lifts results in rapid healing and a more comfortable and predictable recovery for our patients.

The innovative qualities of the PIEZOSURGERY

-Micrometric cutting action for maximum surgical precision and intra-operative sensitivity.

-Selective cutting action for minimal damage to soft tissue, maximum safety for you and your patients.

-Cavitation effect maximum intra-operative visibility and a blood-free surgical site.

This innovative dental technology is very useful in dental implant surgery for example sinus lifting for dental implant placement, tooth extraction, bone splitting and bone grafting procedure, etc.

Osstell

The degree of implant stability is hard to determine once the implant has started to integrate. Also, at placement, stability is difficult to judge objectively and the “tactile feeling” or torque measurements will not work as a baseline for future comparisons. Osstell meters make it possible not only to measure the initial implant stability, but also to monitor the development of osseointegration over time.

Dentists will have more diagnostic information for a continuous work. With the Dexcowin DX-3000 we can bring the x-ray to the patient, not the patient to the x-ray – The patient doesn’t even leave the dentist chair! Saves time and improved workflow!

SuperEndo-Beta and thermoplastic gutta purcha

SuperEndo-Alpha2 offers the functionality of 3-dimensional root canal obturation, temperature control, convenience and ergonomics of a cordless function.

Vertical root canal obturation was proved to decreases the possible risk of a root fracture.

NiTi rotary files: ProTaper (Dentsply-Maillefer) systems

Niti alloy files have quite simply revolutionised our ability to predictably clean and shape the root canal system. In an electric (torque-controlled) motor and endodontic handpiece.

Apex locators

Apex locators have come along way in the last 10 years and now give a very predictable 'linear view' of a 3-dimensional root canal. We know that the apical constriction of a root is never at the radiographic apex, hence the dictum of working the average "1 mm away from the radiographic apex". This usually keeps us out of trouble. But, for absolute certainty the Root ZX II tells us exactly when we have reached the hallowed apical constriction in 90-95% of cases.

Ultrasonics

We now have the technology to be able to apply a certain finesse in certain aspects of our treatment with the help of specially designed ultrasonic tips. This is invaluable for careful removal of intracanal blockages, posts, separated files, or for penetrating through sclerotic dentine and opening root canal orifices, and microsurgery.
